Cocktail Friday: a Mai Tai

Last week we had the Mojito for Cocktail Friday, this Friday we drink a Mai Tai. A Mai Tai is also a cocktail that you drink with rum. Haha you can easily see that I prefer rum as cocktail mixing drink;-). But the next cocktail will be one without rum, I promiss.
In a Mai Tai you put white and brown rum, but for the rest you have many different versions of the Mai Tai.

It’s not really clear who created the first Mai Tai, but the cocktail seems to come from California, although it’s called an Hawaiian cocktail. There are a couple of stories on the internet about the Mai Tai.
The first one who claims to have invented the cocktail, was Donn ‘Don the Beachbomber’ Beach in 1933. He opened his restaurant in tropical style with a couple of rum drinks on the menu in Hollywood. And also a drink called ‘the Original Beachcomber Rum Concoction’ was on the menu. Later this became the Mai Tai.
The second story is from Victor ‘Trader Vic’ Bergeron. He had a restaurant in Eskimo Style in Northern California. In 1934 he was in Hollywood and visited the restaurant of Don the Beachbomber. When he was back in his own restaurant, he changed it to a tropical restaurant called ‘Trader Vic’. He said he made a drink for a couple of friends from Tahiti and they all three said: “Mai Tai roa ae”, which is Tahitian for the best of the world. So Victor called his cocktail Mai Tai.

Nice stories for a cocktail who is also a famous one. But to be honest, I never made it before, so specially for Photos for foodies I tried it……and approved. Nice cocktail.

Cocktail Friday: a Mai Tai

Mai Tai cocktail for Cocktail Friday. Mai Tai is created in 1944 and is made with rum, Orange Curacao, Grenadine, Orgeat Syrup and Lime Juice.
Servings 1


  • 1 Cocktail Shaker


  • 2 parts White rum
  • 2 parts Black rum
  • 1 part Orange Curacao I used Bols Dry Orange
  • 1 part Lemonjuice
  • 1 table spoon of Orgeat Syrup
  • 1 table spoon of grenadine
  • Crushed Ice-Cubes
  • Cocktail Cherries
  • Pineapple Wedges


  • Mix the white rum, Brown rum, Orange curacao, the lemonjuice, the grenadine and the Orgeat Syrup and the (cracked) ice-cubes in a cocktailshaker.
  • Fill the glasses with the Cocktail mix.
  • After that put a slice of pinapple on the edge of the glass, some cocktai cherries on a cocktail pick or in your glass, and your cocktail is ready.
  • They also add Orange Rind to the Mai Tai, but I didn’t do that.
