Crocheting a flag with a heart in it for the World record

I wrote it before in my earlier Blogpost, that I have joined the attempt the worldrecord for the Guinness book of records, to crochet the longest Flag Line of “Het Nijehuis”. In that post I put some information about this attempt and also some examples of nice flags to crochet (including the links where to find the the patterns or descriptions). It’s quite an addiction to crochet all those flags, I’m working on it almost every day. I get more and more Ideas, and searching all over the internet to find new patterns;-). It’s not only fun, I’m also learning a lot of new things about crocheting. On the facebookpage Hakenvoorwereldrecord (Sorry it’s a dutch page), I saw these super nice flags from Mary Timmer – de Croon with a heart in the middle of it. There was no pattern, so I tried to make one on my own. I search on the internet for examples of hearts and started trying. I finally succeeded with a good flag, so now I wrote the pattern down for you, so you can all start crocheting this great flag. Read further for the pattern

For the total flag line I bought some bags with small balls of cotton at Action Netherlands for around 1,69 per bag.

Next to that I’m sponsoring this action with my webshop Okariconcepts and donated for that some balls of cotton from ByClaire, which I will use to make a lot of flags.
For the border I use a cream color 002 Ivory from ByClaire.

I expect to use 3-4 balls of 50 gram, but I’m not sure yet.
For the pattern I used a crochet needle of 3 mm.

The pattern
The pattern is written in US terms. You start the pattern with crocheting the heart in 1 of the colors that you have choosen.

You will start like this:
Round 1: You start with a Magic Loop (or here is another video about how to make a ). If you find this difficult, crochet 4 chain stitches and crochet the ends together with a slip stitch. Then 2 chains again. In the loopt you crochet 3 treble crochets, 3 double crochets, 1 chain, 1 treble crochet, (this will become the underside of the heart), 3 double crochets, I chain, 3 double crochets, 3 treble crochets. Crochet 2 chains, Pull the magic loop and crochet a slip stitch into the ring.

Round 2: Crochet 3 chains, the 1 single crochet and a half double crochet in the first treble crochet from the last round, then 3 half double crochets in the next stitch, 2 half double crochets in the next stitch, 4 single crochets in the next 4 stitches, 1 chain and 1 double crochet in the treble crochet of the point. Sometimes it just didn’t went so well so I needed to improvise by skipping a stitch or crocheting 2 single crochets in 1 stitch at the point where you have to crochet 4 single crochets. Or just start the round again.

Next you go on with another chain, 4 singles crochets in the next 4 stitches, 2 half double crochets in 1 stitch, 3 half double crochets in the next stitch, 1 half and 1 half double crochet and 1 single crochet in the last stitch. 3 chains and a slip stitch in the ring.

Round 3: Crochet 3 chains, then 1 single crochet in the third chain stitch of the second round, 2 singles crochets in the next stitch, 1 single crochet in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch, 9 single crochets in the next 9 stitches, In the point of the heart you crochet 1 single crochet, 1 chain and again 1 single crochet. Then further with again 9 singles crochets in the next 9 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch, 1 single crochet in the next stitch, 2 singles crochets in the next, 1 single crochet in the next one, 3 chains and 1 slip stitch in the ring. The cut your wire and get rid of the loose ends.

The heart is ready now, so we can go on with the light border.

Round 4: Pick up the cream colored wire with your crochet hook (in the 6the stitch counted from the middle of the heart) and crochet 7 chains, then a double crochet in the same stitch where you picked up the cream color. Crochet 4 chains and the a double crochet in the 4th next stitch. Crochet 4 chains and then a double crochet in the 4th next stitch. Crochet 4 chains again and a double stich in the last stitch before the one that represents the underside of the heart.

Crochet 3 chains and 1 double crochet on the other side of the underside stitch. Crochet 4 chains and then a double crochet in the 3h next stitch. Crochet 4 chains and then a double crochet in the 4th next stitch, crochet 4 chains and again a double stitch in the 4th stitch. 3 chains and 1 double stitch in the same stitch.

3 chains and a double chain in the next 3th stitch, 3 chains and a double treble crochet in the middle of the heart. I didn’t pull the yarn completely through the middle of the heart, but into the upper stitch.
Again 3 chains and a slipstitch in the last single crochet of round 3, 3 chains and a slipstick in the 4 chain that you started round 4 with.

Round 5: Crochet a slip stitch in the middle stitch of the 3 chains you made in round 4. Try to crochet this a little bit loosely. Crochet 7 chains and a treble crochet in the same stitch where you made the slipstitch.

Nou you go on with making double crochets in every stitch, until you reach the last stitch on the underside. In that stitch you make a treble stitch, 3 chains and another treble stitch. Next you go further with the double stitches until you arrive at the next corner. Crochet in the first of the 3 chains a double stitch, in the next stitch a treble stitch, 3 chains and in the same stitch another treble stitch. In the 3th chain you crochet a double crochet. Next further with the double crochets until you reach the first 7 chains. Make a slipstitch in the 4th chain, now your round is closed again.

Round 6 en 7: They go almost the same as round 5, except for a few small things:

After the first slipstitch you crochet 6 chains and then a double crochet in the same stitch. And for the corner stitches, you crochet double crochets instead of treble crochets.

Round 8: Almost the whole round 8 is made with slipstitches. You start with 2 chains, then in the first chain of round 7 a slipstitch. , in the second chain a double crochet, 3 chains and in the same stitch again a double crochet. In the 3th chain again a slipstitch. Pay attention to really stick your crochet hook into the stitch and not in the hole below. That seems easier, but then it will be more difficult to make the colored stitch from below over the flag.

In the other stitches you crochet slipstitches, except for the corner stitches. There you will crochet like this: crochet a slipstitch in the first chain, a double crochet in the second chain, 3 chains and again a double crochet in the same stitch. next you go on to the next corner and to the end. Finish the round with a slipstitch in the first stitch of the round.

Now get rid of all the loose ends and the base of the flag is ready. My flag measures around 18,5 cm on the widest point.

For the last decoration we crochet a small round on top of the flag. I took the same color as my heart, but of course you are free to choose what color you want.

As you start, hold the flag in your hand with the good side of you work on top and the colored yarn under your work. You put your crochet needle through your work just between round 8 and round 7. I did this on the lowest point of the flag. Pick up the colored yarn and take it up though your work so you will get a loop.

Then you put your needle one stitch further again through your work and pick other loop. Ty have two stitches on your needle.

You pull the second loop thought the first one, so you will have one stick again. Then you repeat this around the whole flag.

When your reach the first stitch you make a slipstick on top of your work though the first stitch, cut the yarn and pull it through your stitch. Put the yarn though your work below , make a little knot with the first end and get rid of both loose ends.
